Sewing poetry from Zarkadia Quilts

Poetry, well I was never a fan, until I met my husband. The current project was inspired by a poem of Christos Laskaris, (that translates as) “Simply a Surface”. I imagined handquilting the whole poem on the project, and I did.

This project was part of a group prompt (Pani me Pani – FB Group, with the guidance of Anna Kazakou), to create a work of patchwork inspired by poetry. The project began on February 2021 and it was finished a month later. Finally, after all the participants finished with their work, an exhibition was held to showcase all the wonderful ...

Sapporo coat, the serious one from Zarkadia Quilts

Another quilt coat, and I do hope not the last one, was finished in 2021, but as usual, I don’t get to post about it until 2023. Let’s say that this is another story of procrastination, but not for this blog.

The process behind the making-of this quilt coat was again the 100 day project. So, I will tell you some story behind it.

The 100 day project

In covid year 2020, in midst of a quarantine, and specifically on April 1st, started the 100 day project, that is hosted every year by Lindsay Jean Thomson.

In order ...

Sapporo coat, the memory coat from Zarkadia Quilts

Almost two years have passed since I started making this quilted coat, when I participated on the 100 Day Project. This was my first attempt in completing an improvisational project and I must admit it was totally liberating.

My process in making this quilt coat, was to create the “fabric” first and then assemble the coat. Big mistake, I have to admit! Managing such a big piece of quilt was a total  burden at the actual time of quilting it, and I surely will not attempt it for a second time. Now let’s go into some more details.

The ...

A lighter Half-Square-Triangle quilt from Zarkadia Quilts

Scrappy quilts are the best! And actually they are more satisfying for the maker, because they come out of our “trash bins” (if they were gonna be thrown). But no quilter throws anything away, like NOONE!

So what do we do with them? We upcycle, we use in smaller projects, etc, etc. But today I will not be talking about scrappy quilts, I will be talking about THIS scrappy quilt.

I keep a small box with 6 inch squares, that are carefully cut from my fabric scraps. I have more boxes with different square dimensions, but this time I needed ...

Coded Heart quilt, the pink one from Zarkadia Quilts

I have always been a fan of video games, and Super Mario was a part of my childhood. My inspiration for making this pattern was the Mario pixelated heart. I drafted the design, simplified it from a quilters’ point of view, and Tadah!!!

Meet the Coded Heart quilt

A fun and beginner friendly pattern that has no HSTs and is really forgiving with beginner mistakes. It makes your fabrics pop-up, and is totally fat quarter friendly!

Quilt Sizes
The pattern includes instructions for a number of quilt sizes:
  • Baby quilt (45” x 48”)
  • Throw quilt (60” x 64 ...

Modern Hexagon Quilt from Red Pepper Quilts

A Finished Quilt
Modern Hexagon Quilt © Red Pepper Quilts 2021

Hexies are my favorite! I keep coming back to this shape for English paper piecing, and even though the hexagon shape doesn't lend itself to continuous piecing - there's a lot of stop/start sewing - I still love it. Hexies are so versatile, the layout possibilities are endless, and with the right mix of fabric you can have a traditional quilt with a modern feel.

The fabrics used for this quilt (other than the background fabric) were once again pulled from my stash and many are from my loved hoarded Japanese fabrics (by Yuwa Fabrics and ...

All the Stars Quilt from Red Pepper Quilts

All the Stars Quilt - English Paper Pieced © Red Pepper Quilts 2021

I am on a roll - another week and another new quilt to show you, this one too was started and finished in 2021. I love all sorts of quilts, from modern quilts to art quilts - I can appreciate them all - but traditional scrappy quilts steal my heart every time. I have had this quilt, a classic 6-pointed star quilt, on my quilting buckets lists for quite some time, and am pleased to have now ticked it off.

The June Dyson Coverlet from Red Pepper Quilts

A Finished Quilt

June Dyson Coverlet - Handmade Patchwork Quilt © Red Pepper Quilts 2021

Continuing this week with another 2021 finished quilt. This quilt is June Dyson Coverlet; a pattern by Emma from Treehouse Textiles in Mornington (not far from Melbourne, in fact the perfect day trip from Melbourne, and a fabric store truly worthy of visiting in person!). Emma has a unique eye for pattern and fabric/color placement and her quilts and patterns are on my quilting bucket list.

Talula Quilt ~ A Finished Quilt from Red Pepper Quilts

Talula Quilt ~ English Paper Pieced © Red Pepper Quilts November2021

It's time for a blog update! I have been busy sewing, but have - hopefully temporarily - lost my blogging momentum. Here in Melbourne we've had a LOT of home time due to local lockdown and covid restrictions, and as such I have had much time to sit, sew, and reflect. Some days and weeks have been more productive than others, but there seems to be a light at the end of a slow long Winter. It's almost Summer and it feels like we're heading into the good (and jolly) season. This week I took some time to ...

Ice Cream Soda Quilt - English Paper Piecing from Red Pepper Quilts

 A Finished Quilt

Another bucket list quilt! This is my Ice Cream Soda Quilt, a pattern by Jodi from Tales of Cloth. The Ice Cream Soda Quilt is an English Paper pieced quilt. According to my phone photos I started this quilt early January 2021. I took very few progress photos but I do have this snap of my cut and basted pieces, organised by block.

I cut and basted all of the pieces prior to piecing (other than my initial test blocks), using many of my favorite fabrics, and relying on my intuition and a bit of luck in ...

Anna Maria Horner Hexagon Quilt from Red Pepper Quilts

A Finished Quilt.

Anna Maria Horner Hexagon Quilt ® Red Pepper Quilts 2021

Here's one that I made earlier! I finished this quilt top back in March of this year. It seems like only yesterday, and also a lifetime ago. Back then we were living in a covid "normal" world where you could leave your home and visit friends and family. Right now, we're back in a covid lockdown situation whilst we wait for the largely unvaccinated population to get vaccinated. There is plenty of time to sew, and I have been taking advantage of that, plus this week I have dusted off my camera and taken photos ...

Naive Melody quilt, as an art quilt from Zarkadia Quilts

Last April, during the first pandemic lockdown, Lucy Engels started making this quilt as part of the #100dayproject. I was admiring every single beautiful block that she made, a total of 100 blocks. Almost all made of applique and a few pieced blocks. Fortunately she decided to make a pattern out of it! So September 1st the sew-a-long started.

Quilt Process

Lately every quilt that I make is pre-designed on Illustrator, and then comes to life. But for this pattern I only had to choose my main fabrics, and the applique pieces (all of them) came out of my scrap ...

A Vintage Inspired Hexagon Quilt ~ English Paper Pieced from Red Pepper Quilts

 A Finished Quilt

Vintage Inspired Hexagon Quilt - English Paper Pieced © Red Pepper Quilts 2021

Another finished quilt! This English paper pieced hexagon quilt is very heavily inspired by a vintage quilt. The quilt top was completed over several months in 2020 while we were in lockdown due to the pandemic. For various reasons this was a very difficult few months for me and I was fortunate to be able to lean heavily on my craft. At this time I lacked creative ability and vision, but the simple repetitive task of basting papers and stitching by hand saw me through many long evenings and brought me so comfort. I still love English ...

A Four-Patch in a Square Scrap Quilt - Part 2 from Red Pepper Quilts

 A Finished Quilt

A Four-Patch in a Square Quilt © Red Pepper Quilts 2021

At last an update! I finished this quilt late last year however the process of taking photos has eluded me until very recently. A week or two ago I got my dusty camera out and photographed the four quilts that I have made - or at least finished - so far this year. It's then taken longer still to edit and upload photos but here we are today with a blog post!
